our story

Founded in 2023, San Francisco Wave is a competitive women's 9-Man volleyball team built on a sport that has long brought together the Chinese American community.

We're a group of friends at our core. Some of us were teammates and some rivals, across club and school volleyball before we were Wave. In those years, we were coached by mentors who were deeply involved in 9-Man themselves. They showed us there was a place for us to compete, reconnect, and belong.

After graduating from college, we formed SF Wave to make waves—because we knew we could compete with the best in 9-Man. Today, we carry on a tradition we love, playing for the community that raised us.

Built by a Community

SF Wave wasn't created by one person.

It exists because of generations of players, coaches, teammates, families, and volunteers who invested in those who came after them. As we’ve grown, many of us have become coaches ourselves, passing on what was given to usÍ. We hope the next generation will one day find their own place in this community, just as we did.

With gratitude

To the coaches and mentors who believed in us, challenged us, and welcomed us into the 9-Man community—we wouldn't be here without you.
